Why Do People Hate Small Dogs? And Call Them Stupid?

I have 2 dogs a small havanese and a golden retriever. They are both very smart dogs and are very well mannered why? Because I trained them. I taught them all their manners and I am not even a teenager yet. They are also not hard to train either. It is true that some small dog breeds mostly terriers are stubborn with commands but most arent usually stubborn when it comes to manners. So why do people think dogs that are small dont deserve to be dogs? Why do they think they are stupid I mean I know people spoil them but stupid I have no idea how anyone would come up with that. I mean my havanese is anything but stupid he can open his crate, open doors, open cabinets, get on top of things with out jumping, makes up his only “agility course” out of furniture, and is a genius at pit-pocketing(He oddly likes stealing paper to shred)

Small dogs are very smart. People think just because they are small, they can’t do anything! But they can. My friend called my puppy stupid. And puppies don’t know better though. That doesn’t make them stupid!

Hi, I have small dogs too. I have 3 Maltese terriers and a Bolognese dog. They are very smart.
I have also heard some one say that small dogs must feel inferior because they are small compared to big dogs. I say Utter rubbish. Small dogs are happy, fearless and outgoing and certainly DON’T feel inferior!

    Because they’re small. And stupid.
I do not believe there is a general bias against smaller dogs, though I happen to prefer larger breeds.

Who said that? I never said that. If some one did it must be they’ve had some bad experiences with little dogs. I think it may be many owners are not as conscientious as you are and don’t bother training or making little dogs behave because they think because the dog is small they don’t need to. But any intelligent person knows the fault is not with the little guys but their owners!

my only reason would be they don’t think animals should be treated with respect like humans are treated with respect.
i’d treat the animal with respect.
    expcially the small ones.
    they’re so adorable!!!!!!!!

i really dont know why they h8 small dogs. i luv them. I may get a 3 month old yorkie puppy. people say that they yap alot and they bite. not all little dogs yap alot and not all small dogs bite alot.it depends on the dog. small dogs are good because they cost less money to take care of and they take up less space. it is a sterotype when people have been bitten by a small dog and they say that all small dogs are bad. like for instance pit bulls. pit bulls are not born a bad breed. many people have been hurt and killed by pit bulls but its a sterotype that all pit bulls are bad which makes people not want to buy them, never blame the dog blame the trainer/owner.

It’s because some people are idiots. Don’t listen to them.

There is nothing wrong with small dogs. I have a teacup yorkie and she is the best thing. Guys usually are the ones who are against small breeds because they think they are supposed to be a masculine animal. Terriers are sometimes stubborn but they are one of the most intelligent breeds.

You’re right, small dogs are not automatically stupid because they are small. But, people often consider them to be stupid for several reasons:
1.) Small dogs are often high-strung. They are tiny balls of energy that will yipyipyipyipyipyip to defend their territory. Some people find this annoying, and call the dogs dumb. (Which is illogical).
2.) Some people don’t see the point of having a small dog. Humans and dogs have a very long history of co-existance, and more often than not dogs were put to work. So, because a small dog can’t pull a sled, fetch the heavy newspaper, or protect you from a bear, small dogs have “no use” in their eyes. They forget that humans have artificially selected for almost all dog breeds that exist in the world today, and that dogs were bred small not merely to act as companions, but to perform tasks that required them to be small. For example, many small dogs were bred to catch rats, a VERY important task. Imagine a great dane lumbering around a barn after a rat! lol.
3.) The third, and perhaps most important, reason people view small dogs as stupid, is that they consider the dog a reflection of the owner. Like you brought up in your post, the owner teaches the dog its manners. There are some people in this world that are not responsible pet owners. They choose a dog based solely on its cuteness factor…something small that is “low maintenence”…something they can dress up in little clothes and basically use as an accessory. These people do not usually train their dogs very well, and the dog, through no fault of its own, will misbehave: yip and nip and piddle on the floor. The dog has no opportunity to behave in a “smart” manner, and the owner’s stupidity shows through the dog.
Your dog sounds very intelligent, and I don’t think it’s an anomally. A dog’s behaviour, whether it’s small or large, depends heavily on the behaviour of the owner.

  11. 2Westies says:

A small or large dog is all a matter of personal preference. I personally prefer small dogs, I’ve always had small dogs, and will undoubtedly continue to have small dogs. Having said that I will say that I don’t hate large dogs or call them stupid.

  12. wreeve99 says:

I think the size of the dog is totally personal preference. the only dog that has ever bitten me was a badly trained little dog. i therefore personally prefer bigger dogs.
please don’t fret about what others think. they are either ignorant or just don’t “like” little dogs.
All dogs are individuals and are only as intelligent as they are allowed to be. some of the most intelligent dogs are little ones that have been well trained.

I personally cant STAND small dogs but i wont critisize or offend anyone who has one. Its not because i think that they are stupid, i just dont like them because i dont see any point in small dogs (they are more like cats in my eyes). I love the bigs ones who serve to protyect and love you (although all dogs are capable of it, but you know)
    anyway goodday!

  14. Cavalier KCS mom says:

Because people that have small dogs feel they don’t need to train them so they tend to have major behavioral issues. Most aren’t properly socialized so they tend to all be little yappy ankle biters and it annoys most people.

  15. Taylor ツ says:

idk but i love small dogs

  16. Faith4je says:

I don’t know where you are getting your facts that people hate small dogs but you are wrong.
I’ve always loved small dogs. Our family will be getting a dog soon and we are looking for a small dog. I know a bunch of people who have small dogs.
I’ve never in my life have heard people say small dogs are dumb or stupid.
I’m sure you just miss heard or didn’t get all your facts straight.
