What Type Of Dog Is Best For A College Student? Havanese, Maltese, Havamalt Or Shihmalt?

I will be living in an apartment and I can spend a decent amount of time with my dog, but I need to train him/her not to bark a lot, and I want a small dog but they cannot be too sensitive because I may not be available 24/7. I also want to be able to carry my dog in a dogpurse. Of course, I also would like a cute dog…

If you want a dog you can carry in a purse buy a stuffed toy. Dogs are living, breathing, beings not fashion accessories. I would hope as a college student you’d be intelligent enough to realize that.
There’s no such thing as a “Havamalt” or “Shihmalt”. Those are MUTTS. Please don’t support the breeding of mutts for profit. Reputable breeders don’t crossbreed dogs and give them cutesy names – greedy backyard breeders do. And if you want a crossbreed dog – go adopt one from a shelter.
How can you afford to go to college full-time, pay your rent and utilities plus pay for a dog? Or would mommy and daddy be paying everything? College is a very busy time and I think you should be focusing on your studies not prancing about like Paris Hilton with a cutesy dog in a purse.

Absolutely none of those. Maltese yip a lot. It sounds like you need a small, apartment dog that is low on upkeep. I would suggest an Italian Greyhound. They are quiet, elegant, small (5-15#) , barely have any coat (so they like to dress up) and don’t have the sinus problems and goopy stained eyes of short nosed toy breeds, the yippiness of tiny terrier types or the difficult coats of mop breeds, poms or their crosses or even the constant grooming of the tiny poodles. Even better they do not have the anal gland issues of most toy breeds (oily butt gland that has to be expressed – squeezed out – regularly) that gives them that nasty rotted poo stink that they scrape across the carpet. And yes all the breeds and mixes you mentioned have that. http://www.akc.org/breeds/italian_greyho…
before you buy a pet from a breeder check you local IG rescuehttp://www.italiangreyhound.org/pages/50…
On the bright side the IG’s are athletic enough to actually still keep up with you if you want to walk with them. You do have to brush their teeth tough.

Dog purse? NO mature, responsible dog owner would ever do that to their dog. PERIOD. Purses are for inanimate objects like wallets and car keys, not dogs.
Those things are made with fashion in mind, not the comfort of the dog: which means a dog could easily over heat, be pinched or poked, feel cramped, etc… and all can lead up to a snippy, insecure little rodent sized beast.
Dogs have legs for a reason – even small dogs need exercise and the time to socialize. If they do not get that exercise (or any type of socialization or ability to wander and explore) then they DO become overactive little monsters.
And you say you go to college? Hmm…
Do some more research on proper dog care.
PS – If you say “well, i saw so-and-so do it” then i’m gonna scream… if THEY jumped off of a bridge, would you do that as well?
PPS – No such thing as a “Havamalt” or a “Shihmalt” PERIOD. They are overpriced mutts bred by greedy people that care not for the dogs, but for the profit.

First off, I’m not going to recommend those stupid designer breeds they call dogs. They are overpriced mutts.
Second, both the Havanese and Maltese require lots of grooming and being in college you won’t have much time for that kind of grooming. I would suggest a short haired breed like a Boston Terrier. Sometimes smaller dogs have a lot more energy too.
Third, please, please PLEASE get your dog from a shelter. An adult dog would also be better because they are out of the chewing stage and have less energy and are house trained. And please, please, PLEASE get the dog spayed or neutered.
    Hope that Helps!
P.S. You can also find cute mutts at the pound… Not to mention they’re cheaper

  5. BYB get the flock out says:

The Maltese and the Havanese are both nice dogs but need lots of grooming.
The Havamalt and the Shihmalt sound like some sort of milkshake type drink and I guess they would be OK to drink but they are not a dog breed
Oh Lord I missed the whole pocket book thing, billfolds, keys, makeup goes in pocket books, dogs go on the ground

  6. ragapple says:

during college and the immediately following years your life is full of changes – not the best time for taking responsibility for a dog.
If you can’t live without one go for an OLDER rescue one that will be more placid than a young dog and is not a decade long commitment

  7. Salt&Pepper Apricot says:

When I was in college, I had zero time for a dog, what with being a full time student plus working. Wait until you do have more time for a dog. Then research where and where not to get a dog or puppy.
    Never a pet store. http://stoppuppymills.org/ http://saynotoanimalsinpetshops.com/ http://millbusters.com/
And beware of what’s called a Back Yard Breeder.http://www.dog-e-data.com.au/saynotoback…
Get one from a shelter or rescue and save a life.http://petfinder.com/ Don’t type in a mutt name. Either type in Havanese, Maltese, Shih Tzu, etc. They’ll come up with all the mixed breed dogs as well, but they’ll say Havanese/Maltese mix and so on. Shelters and rescues don’t recognize stupid mutt names that puppy mills made up so as to bilk the general public for hundreds more than what they’d pay if they realized they were just getting a mutt.
My salt and pepper cutie on the left came from a rescue a couple months ago. My other dog was given to us.
Edit: The first poster is right about dog purses.
Edit: Pink, you have obviously never been to college. You have no idea what you are talking about. I have, as have many others, and we know what we are talking about and aren’t “stupid”.

Why would you want a dog in a purse? If you want a dog in a purse you should really get a stuffed dog which comes with a purse.Or if you don’t want any of that you should a bird.I reccomend you to get a bird.
