What Is The Best Way To Train A Shih Tzu, And What Kinds Of Things Should I Look Out For?

I am adopting a 3 month old Shih Tzu female puppy today from a rescue organization, she is one of the many dogs rescued from the puppymill bust in Jackson County, Georgia where the “breeder” is facing several animal cruelty charges. I have a 9 month old male Havaton, Grady (Havanese/Coton de Tulear) who is wonderful, sleeps through the night, was potty trained in four months and is excited about getting a new sister! But I understand Shih Tzu are typically pretty difficult to housebreak. Also, she was fixed 3 days ago so she’s probably going to be pretty sore. When is it okay to let her play with Grady?

    Hi,
As we all know that some basic obedience training makes dogs more fun to be around. What many of us don’t know is that it has other, less obvious, benefits. Obedience training helps your dog see you as her leader. And here’s how to teach her some basic commands http://dogtime.com/basic-commands-obedie…
and you can also crate train her, here it is http://dogtime.com/housetraining-crate-t…
if you would also want to housetrain her to avoid some accidents/damages in your home, here http://dogtime.com/housetraining-for-pup…
    Hope this helps!
    Happy training!

I crate trained my two dogs, and it took a month to potty train my first one and two months for the second. It taught them to hold it better, since they generally don’t “go” in their space, but to avoid bladder infections you should take them out often. You can google “crate training” and there are a lot of websites that go into details of it. My dogs adapted well to it and would go in voluntarily when they wanted to get away from all the attention we would give them.

When I got a second dog, my dog trainer advised me to keep them separated majority of the time for at least the first week. The new dog needs to get used to you and the new environment.
Also, there are tons of good sites to help train dogs. This one is my favorite: http://www.openpaw.org/
