Havanese are, in my opinion, the best small dog. They are hypoallergenic and they do NOT shed, but they do lose hair like people do. I have only heard of one child that was allergic to their saliva, but that I think is very rare. They are like like little clowns and love to play. They are not yappy, and are not fragile like the maltese seems to be. They are usually around 10 pounds full grown vs. about 6 pounds for a maltese. They are great with kids and are very smart.
They usually cost around $1800. My only advice if you decide to get a Havanese is to get one from a reputable breeder that does health testing and has AKC registered dogs. This will save you from money on vet bills and heartache in the future because they are more likely to develop a health issue.
I do not think you would ever regret getting a Havanese they are absolutely the best dogs. If you go to www.havanese.org the AKC National Havanese club they have plenty of information and breeder referals.

All dogs shed, even the ones that claim they don't.
They are usually bred by back yard breeders, so later on, you will be paying enormous vet bills.

I'm sorry, I don't know anything about the havanese, but you might also look into the Maltese. They have a single coat, and are better for people with allergies as well.

Here you go:http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/havanese.htm
I also recommend Maltese, yorkshire terriers (yorkies), or poodles.
