How Can I Train My Dog To Stop Eating Cat Food?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
Ok, so here’s the deal. My puppy is a havanese, 8 months old, and I just recently bought a savannah kitten. I hate it when she eats the cat’s wet food because she, as many of you know, has a beard and all of that nasty crap gets in it. Then she will come lick my face and it’s disgusting. I have a crate and always punish her when I see her eating it, but it doesn’t help.
I can’t stick with dry cat food because I have an 11 year old cat that was just found to have a hyper thyroid. She had ulcers on her tongue and it hurts her mouth to crunch on dry food.
I have tried everything, even putting the cat food on the counters, but then I caught my cat jumping on them when she was hungry! I also tried putting a gate where I keep their food, but then the cats wouldn’t jump over it.
I am soooo tired of cleaning her damn beard because she is defiant and won’t let me. I also bathe her once a week too, but it isn’t enough. (My vet recommended to bathe her this often.) Jimmy, my savannah is already a HUGE almost 5 month old kitten, so I cannot do what some people have suggested and cut a hole in something hollow that only he can fit into because she can fit in it too.
Please help me, she is in her crate right now because she ate the cat food I hid in the laundry room on top of the litter box!
Thanks Dx
How Can I Get My Dog To Pay Attention To Me When I Am Trying To Train Her?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
We have a 5 month-old Yorkie/Pom/Havanese cross, and we have only had her for 1 month. She was a pet store dog, and she was really sick when we got her, and was difficult to train once she got better, but all of her bad habits have been resolved…except for 2! One is that she does not make eye contact or respond when we get after her or call her name. We have tried EVERYTHING, from a horn to a clicker, to that “psshhht” noise that the Dog Whisperer (Cesar Millan) uses. Most dogs would cower when they are getting in trouble or know they are doing something bad. She just thinks it’s funny, and tries to engage playing. That is the other habit that we are having a problem with. She is really “bitey” all the time, moreso than just regular puppy play. If we are on the phone or walking out of the room, she follows us around and bites us on the back of the legs! And if we get after her, she snaps her teeth and jumps up to bite our faces! It’s not an aggressive bite, but we’ve tried everything

What Is The Best Way To Train A Shih Tzu, And What Kinds Of Things Should I Look Out For?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
I am adopting a 3 month old Shih Tzu female puppy today from a rescue organization, she is one of the many dogs rescued from the puppymill bust in Jackson County, Georgia where the “breeder” is facing several animal cruelty charges. I have a 9 month old male Havaton, Grady (Havanese/Coton de Tulear) who is wonderful, sleeps through the night, was potty trained in four months and is excited about getting a new sister! But I understand Shih Tzu are typically pretty difficult to housebreak. Also, she was fixed 3 days ago so she’s probably going to be pretty sore. When is it okay to let her play with Grady?
How Do I Train My Lap Dog To Be A Lap Dog?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
We had a Maltese who passed away at the age of ten very suddenly. Our Maltese would always want to sit on our laps, that’s where he was happiest or at the very least pressed up against our legs on the couch. Since our Maltese passed away we bought a Havanese puppy who’s now 11months old, he’s the best little dog & follows me around the house & won’t let me out of his sight but he’s not comfortable sitting on my lap or even on the couch next to me, he’s always on the floor wherever I am, how can I train him to sit on my lap or next to me on the couch? He always jumps off & lays on the floor? I bought my Mum a Havanese which is almost two years old now & he’s the perfect lap dog, like a rag doll permanently on Mums lap! Is it something that will come with age or is it something I should start working on now?
Is It Beneficial To Train A Sled Dog By Having Him Pull Someone Who Is Wearing Skis Instead Of Using The Sled?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
I would like to start training my neighbor’s Havanese for dog sledding (just like the Iditarod!…almost). As I am somewhat addicted to skiing, I have plenty of skiing gear around, but as I am new to the dog sledding hobby, I haven’t got a sled yet.
I do, however, know that severl dog sledding races have already been cancelled this year due to lack of sufficient snow cover in some areas. This means that I have until next winter to find a dog sled anyways; they’ll probably go on sale over the summer, eh?
Would it be beneficial to start training the dog this winter by having him pull me around while I wear a pair of skis?
Any other suggestions for training a sled dog for racing sans sled would be appreciated.
Also, any suggestions regarding a technique for training cats for my sledding team would be appreciated as well. I know I’m not a “cat person;” I have tried training a cat by having it pull me while I wore my skis, but it just ran away…

I’ve been doing lots of research & wanted personal opinions. Please let me know what you think… I was leaning towards a Boston Terrier, Havanese or a Coton de Tulear. Thanks for your input!
Does Anyone Here Crate Train Their Puppies?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
We are crate training our new Havanese and my wife wants to know whether it is a good idea to leave water in the crate or feed and water them in the morning and wait until she gets home from work to water and feed them more? She needs to get it housebroken ASAP since we both work (off for Christmas vacation at present).
I Have A 11 Week Old Havanese/shih Tzu And I Am Trying To Kennel Train Him, Am I Doing Anything Wrong?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
I have had him for 8 days.
so i put him in there at night when we are sleeping, i wake up once through the night to take him out to go pee, and he has been doing ok with that for the last 2 nights.
in the morning (5:30am) i take him out first thing and he goes pee and i praise him.
i bring him down for a nap around 11am for 2 hours and that’s when the crazy barking happens, i give him a bone or something to chew on and he has a toy, he plays and pee’s b4 he goes in.
then i take hime out to go pee + praise and then around 6:00pm i put him back in for 1 hour, after lots of play and cuddles through the day.
then bedtime is usually around 10:30 and then we start all over again.
He barks alot during the day but only a little bit through the night. (he did bark lots through the night b4 but it’s gotten better)
I feed him three times a day and i make sure he has poo’d b4 i put him in the kennel. So am i doing everything ok? is it going to stop soon? will he ever be kennel trained?
