Never go for a “designer dog” you will have more problems since usually they are 2 unrelated breeds mixed just for money’s sake and not because of temperament or good qualities. Just for the “special” factor. I’ve only met a few havanese, they have all been extremely cool little dogs. And I dont usually care for little dogs. I would go with a havanese. You can find a GOOD breeder and get a quality dog for the same price as some of the expensive mutts people are breeding. Try looking at petfinder.com for a rescue dog, I doubt there are many but if you find one that’s sure to be a plus since all dogs are irritating at the puppy stage. http://www.havanese.org/
If you go to the havanese club page they have a rescue page and a breeder referral page, it can help you find a responsible breeder in your area. Often if you go to a show breeder they will have retired show dogs (best option in my opinion, they’re older, but not old and have had obedience and are CALM!!!) or pet quality puppies that are just not show perfect. If you go to a club memeber breeder you will always have an excellent experience, they not only know EVERYTHING there is to know about their breed and can help you through tough spots, but if something ever happens and you cant keep the dog they will always take it back. You’ll never get that with anybody that breeds mutts for profit, and anybody that breeds mutts breeds for profit.
Good luck, Hope that helps!
What are the pros and cons of each breed?
A Morkie is a designer dog that is over priced, no consistancy, no concern for genetics and bred by a money hungry person that has no business breeding.
A Havanese will be a little more consistant, but the breeder should be a reputable breeder. Why not rescue a dog from a local shelter or rescue group?
Here are some things to think about and question to ask a breeder. Many apply for ANY brred of dog.
A GOOD BREEDER STRIVES TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THE BREED, ADHERING TO THE STANDARD SET BY THE HCA AND ACCEPTED BY THE AKC.
THERE ARE ONLY TWO TYPES OF BREEDERS, RESPONSIBLE AND KNOWLEDGEABLE OR IRRESPONSIBLE AND UNKNOWLEDGEABLE.
RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS BREED DOGS TOGETHER ONLY WHEN BOTH THE SIRE AND DAM HAVE BEEN MEDICALLY TESTED FOR GENETIC HEALTH PROBLEMS AND FOUND FREE OF SUCH PROBLEMS, HAVE EXCELLENT TEMPERAMENTS, AND SOUND STRUCTURE.
RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS SELL PUPPIES RIGHT FROM THEIR OWN HOME, THEY NEVER PLACE A PUPPY IN A PET SHOP OR GIVE IT TO A BROKER.
A REPUTABLE BREEDER ALSO PARTICIPATES IN CANINE ACTIVITIES OTHER THAN JUST BREEDING. FOR EXAMPLE, CONFORMATION, OBEDIENCE, AGILITY, RESCUE, DOG CLUBS, THERAPY DOG, ETC. GOOD BREEDERS CARE VERY MUCH ABOUT THE PLACEMENT OF THEIR PUPPIES AND WILL ASK YOU QUESTIONS ALSO.
GOOD BREEDERS PROVIDE THE BEST CARE IN NUTRITION, CLEANLINESS,VETERINARY SERVICES AND SOCIALIZATION AND LOTS OF LOVE. A GOOD BREEDER IS AVAILABLE FOR YOU TO ASK QUESTIONS AND TO PROVIDE FOLLOW-UP SUPPORT.
A RESPONSIBLE BREEDER WILL HAVE COMPLETE AND UP TO DATE RECORDS THAT COMPLY WITH THE AKC REGULATIONS AND WILL MAKE THESE RECORDS AVAILABLE.
YOU CAN FIND A GOOD BREEDER BY ASKING A LOT OF QUESTIONS. VISIT DOG SHOWS TO MEET BREEDERS THAT MAY BE IN YOUR AREA. CONTACT THE HCA BREEDER REFERRAL COORDINATOR, AT http://WWW.HAVANESE.ORG, JOIN THE HAVANESE LIST ON YAHOO, AND CONTACT LOCAL HAVANESE CLUBS.
BELOW YOU WILL FIND A LIST OF QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT WANT TO ASK OF A BREEDER YOU CONTACT. DO YOUR HOMEWORK ABOUT THIS WONDERFUL BREED WHETHER YOU ARE WANTING A PET OR A SHOW HAVANESE. AFTER ALL, YOU WANT A HEALTHY HAVANESE TO SPEND MANY WONDERFUL YEARS WITH.
1.DO YOU CHECK YOUR DOGS FOR INHERITED EYE DISEASES (CERF) AND WHAT OTHER HEALTH TESTS DO YOU PERFORM ON YOUR BREEDING DOGS? ASK FOR CERF AND OFA/CHIC NUMBERS. OR ASK FOR THE SIRE AND DAM’S AKC NUMBER SO YOU CAN LOOK UP THE HEALTH TESTING INFO YOURSELF AT http://WWW.OFFA.ORG.
2.WILL YOU DO THE INITIAL WORMING AND VACCINATIONS OF THE PUPPIES? HOW MANY?
3.WHAT ARE YOUR REQUIREMENTS REGARDING SPAYING AND NEUTERING OF A PET HAVANESE?
4.WHAT CHOICES DO I HAVE REGARDING SEX AND COLOR?
5.DO YOU HAVE BOTH PARENTS ON SITE? IF ONLY HAVE THE DAM, DO YOU HAVE INFORMATION AND PICTURES OF THE SIRE? NOTE: IF NEITHER PARENT IS ON SITE, RUN FAST, AND DON’T ASK ANY MORE QUESTIONS!
6.AT WHAT AGE COULD I BRING MY PUPPY HOME?
7.WHAT DO YOU CHARGE FOR SHOW OR PET? HAVANESE COST ANYWHERE FROM $1500.00 – $2500.00
8.ARE THE PARENTS AND PUPPIES AKC REGISTERED? IF NOT, WHY?
9.WILL YOU PROVIDE ME WITH A COPY OF THE PUPPIES PEDIGREE?
10.DO YOU SHOW YOUR DOGS IN CONFORMATION OR AGILITY?

19.WHERE DO YOU KEEP THE PUPPIES FROM BIRTH UNTIL THEY GO TO THEIR NEW HOMES?
whats a morkie?
A Morkie is a mixed breed or mutt, if you will. If you do decide to get a Morkie, don’t pay any more than $50 for it.
If you are willing to spend the money on a dog, I would go with the Havanese.
Do you really wanna fall into the “Designer-Dog” Fad?!?! Come on! I’d go with the havanese cause with a Morkie you are paying $1000 for nothing more than a MUTT!!! Go to your local shelter and adopt a little mutt! Save a life! wouldn’t that make you feel better?
deffinalty get the havanese if you get the other you are supporting the people who run puppy mills and profit off the dogs they sell. There is no such thing as designer puppies they are mutts. They are produced to make money that is it.
A “Morkie” is nothing but a mutt. Don’t pay more than $50 for a mutt, or it makes you look like a fool when you explain what breed she is to people who are knowledgeable about dogs.
a morkie is NOT a breed it is a MUTT ONLY TERRIBLE breeders sell morkies.
no clue. i have more expiriance with chihuahuas which BY THE WAY ARN’T little yappy dogs. all dogs are yappy or barky usually unless trained.
Hard choice, morkies are very cute but see if you can get one from a shelter or rescue first,I love them, they are sooooo cute! If you can not rescue one then maybe a Havanese. By the way whether a dog is purebred or mix does not make them any different, they are dogs, one way or the other
