My Havanese Puppy Is Now 16 Weeks – Is It Too Late To Crate Train Him?

He only likes being in his crate at night when we are all in bed – during the day he whines and cries when I put him in his crate. My goal is to have him do his “potty” outside only – I have heard that keeping him in his crate and taking him out only for “potty” is effective. Can I start this method if I have had my puppy now for over 3 weeks?

yes of course he’s still young! my puppy (well she just turned a year) always wined in the beginning (and still sometimes does) but they need to know that your the boss. my dog learned not to go potty in the crate right away because they know that thats there home and who wants to live in their own S*** right?
Well you shouldn’t leave your dog in the crate and “only” take him out to go potty. You should only lock him in his crate at night. Whoever told you about this method was wrong. It’s abusing the dog to keep him locked up all the time. Please don’t do that. If you want your dog to potty outside only then take him outside often. At least once every few hours. If you have a fenced in yard you can install a doggy door so your dog can go out on his own. This method it the acceptable way to potty train your dog. After a little while your pup will go to the door when it has to go potty and “ask” to be let out. Keeping it in the crate isn’t a good idea.
It ise never too late to crate train but he doesn’t need to be in the crate 24 – 10. Only when you are not home. When you are home, he will be on a leash by your side what ever you are doing. When you see him circle or sniff the ground you know what is coming and you tell him potty outside and quickly bring him outside with a treat. Not just any dog treat, a piece of cooked chicken or bacon or something so delicious which is only for potty training. When he goes outside, make a happy fuss and give the treat and say something like ” good dog” or good potty”. If you can be consistant for 3 – 4 days, you may just have it done in that time period. Good luck. Also limit water and food so you can kind of time when the dog will need to go out. Don’t leave a bowl of water for him unless it is a very warm day.
Not at all. I didn’t hear about crate training until my dog was 5 months old, and I started it then.
If you are consistent about the training, you will see great results! I did.
Dogs need a strict routine. I don’t think you gave your puppy a long enough time to adjust to crate training. Try it for another month, and then if it still isn’t working, try something new.
Good Luck, I know what a pain in the butt house breaking is.
Nope, it’s not too late. When he is in the crate and crying, ignore him. Don’t say no, hush, coddle or anything else. Absolutely pretend that he does not exist until he stops crying and settles down. I wouldn’t suggest leaving him in his crate all the time, however. Just when you’re out of the house/gone.

You only keep them in a crate at night & when your away. It is not too late , potty training is time consuming.
Yeah, that should be good. Just don’t wait another couple weeks.
