My Dogs Are Really Close To Being Potty Trained, How Do I Finish?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
They’re a lhasa apso, and a lhasa apso/havanese mix. Usually, if my husband and I are in the room, they will not go. We generally let the out every two hours or so to relieve themselves. My problem is, when we leave for a bit, we leave them in the kitchen and you can’t even IMAGINE the mess that’s in there when we get home. Also, we generally let them sleep in our room, and every other night I wake up to the smell of dog crap. I can’t punish them both, because I don’t know who did it. I know they’re both capable of holding it, because we travel with them frequently, and they usually wait for a period of 10-12 hours while driving before they go. What should I do? My husband I are trying to conceive, and I really would rather not deal with this problem while being pregnant or having a newborn! Help!

……they do ….because they can…….1) Scold the dogs (you have to do them both for now)….2)swat their rear with a rolled up newspaper , while putting their nose in the mess (they MUST associate the incident with the punishment……3)crate the dog for a time out……..it would be wise to crate these dogs in separate crates when you leave…or at night…I had four dachshunds when I was married…at night, they were given the signal…all four ran to our office , where the crates were kept….quite happily…it was their SAFE place…..nice blankets…we locked them down and in the morning , they were let out for the day…we left them outside in a fenced in yard if the weather was nice….in the basement , if the weather was bad….both spaces were set up in a nice way…with toys and blankets……your dog is being lazy because there are no consequences..the dog is not stupid….add negative consequences to the equation , and as soon as the dog makes the connection…..things will start to change for you….I advise you to start with the negative reinforcement before you start the crating so the dog can make an association…..the dog will NOT defecate in the crate…….unless there is a control problem…maybe a few times in the beginning….but they will pick up on this quickly…..lol……leave them their faves in their crates….make sure they are large enough for the animal to be comfortable in………you don’t need this problem with a new baby…..it is a simple problem…..they want to do right…it is an understanding problem..they just need a little education……remember…your dogs have the intelligence and emotional level of a 2 – 3 year old child….their brain is about the size of a walnut…lol…….have fun……after proofreading ny answer..I realize I was unclear…the dogs stayed with us if we were home…in the house…it was only when we left that they were left outside or in the basement…..
