Is Real Food Such As Veggies, Meat, Good For A Havanese Dog?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
I read somewhere that a lot of dog food isn’t good for dogs because they are made from meat deemed inedible for humans and stuff like that. I heard that feeding your dog real food like chicken and apples and veggies and oatmeal and stuff like that is better for the health of your dog. Is this true? If I do this, im not going to make it unhealthy, probably just like cooked chicken and brown rice and softened veggies.

Home cooking is very healthy since you can control what your dog eats. No by-products, no chemicals, etc.
But you have to make sure you are feeding your dog a properly balanced diet. Definitely consult with a canine nutritionist before home cooking for your dog.
Make sure you know what fruits and vegetables are and are not good for dogs. (Grapes, raisins, avocados – bad!)
Preparing food for your dog can be time consuming. You’ll need a lot of counter space and refrigerator/freezer space. That’s why commercial dog food is so popular – it’s much easier to prepare and serve.
A high quality kibble can be just as good and much more convenient. Here’s a website where you can check out commercial dog foods: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com
Another option is to do both – high quality kibble combined with home cooking. My crew gets kibble in the morning because it’s easier than preparing food. But in the evening they get home cooked because I have the time to prepare it for them.
There are high-quality and low-quality dog foods. To see where the different foods rank, check out http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_… .
Yes, dogs can eat veggies, meat, etc. Dogs don’t technically need veggies, they don’t digest them completely to get all the nutrients out unless the vegetables are pureed. (But many dogs, mine included, like them as a snack/treat.)
What dogs do need in their diet is meat. If you want to prepare your dog’s meals, I suggest feeding raw (raw meat, organ, and bones). It takes some research to get started, but if you’re interested, here’s some information on it: http://www.dogster.com/forums/Raw_Food_D…
