I Have A New Havanese Puppy. I Have To Crate Him At Night, And After A Week He Is Still Crying And Yowling!!?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
The puppy is 11 weeks old. He is alone during the day from 7:30 – 2:30, but from that time on we have 5 kids that play and love on him to death! Shouldn’t he be tired? How much longer will he be yowling? Help!

you could try to have him sleep in your bed. my shihtzu is totally fine when he sleeps with me. He gets up at 6 or 7 though… that part can get annoying.
The Havanese is a small dog, and many small dogs desire and require the closeness of people on a continual basis. The Havanese was bred to be a companion. They are very people-oriented, and often follow humans around the house, even to the bathroom. Without that closeness they may become anxious and stressed. I guarantee you that if the puppy sleeps closer to you or with someone in the family, the crying and yowling will stop.
I have a 13 weeks old Havanese puppy. The first three nights I tried to get him to sleep in the crate and all night he would whine and cry. So i decided that i would let the puppy just lay in bed with me since he is still getting used to my home and this atmosphere. Well, when he knew that i would take him out when he cried and that I would be there for him (ONLY AT NIGHT!). He started sleeping in his crate because he felt safe. What i did, and still do, is i let him fall asleep in my bed and then i put him in his crate and he sleeps the wholeeeeee night. It’s wonderful. Just show your puppy that you are there for him/her and let him/her know that they are in a safe place.
Oh also, place a ticking clock in his crate. It sounds like their mothers heartbeat and it will help them sleep.
What’s a havanese? Lol… kidding.. but I bet that’s what people say to you when you tell them what breed your dog is. Congrats and getting a cutie!
Poor doggie, he probably sleeps during the day when he’s alone and so at night he just wants to play and play and play. Is he in the crate all day and then night too? Poor thing
It will eventually stop. Where do you keep the crate? Stay near the crate, you shouldn’t be tempted to try to calm him down while he’s crying. Wait till he’s has a calm moment and then praise him.
try putting a towel over the front door of the crate. you can also try putting one of your old shirts in the crate with him(with your scent on it), or a stuffed toy. one of these should help.
Maybe he is scared, uncomfy? Put a large pillow in there so he will have a cushion. Does he need to go ‘potty’? Is he scared? Try to narrow down the prob, then fix it.
You could put something with your smell on it.The puppy will feel close to you so it will let him stop crying and yowling for you.
