Have You Ever Met A Breed Champion? What Was Your First Experience With One?

I have been around mutts and other “normal” type dogs my entire life. I saw a dog training demonstration with this adorable little Havanese having a blast showing off his tricks (including agility, directed retrieve, and long stays). It turns out that this little guy was not only very well-trained, but also a breed champion. I realized this is the first titled dog I’ve ever met!
I was impressed with the guy. What are your stories?

In the late 60′s/early 70′s, when I was young, my parents showed dandie dinmont terriers….this is when I met the first champion dog. Our first show dandie’s name was, CH Wyndacy Brite and Brassy. We later aquired other dogs and showed them to thier championsips as well. My parents dog showing stopped after my mom was diagnosed with cancer in ’74.
When I became old enough to own my own dog, I got into cocker spaniels. A few of the titled dogs names I owned were CH osage’s Champagne Celebration CD, CGC, TD. A little buff cocker who was a joy to have a round. She was beautiful and smart and people loved here. My dog, Tailor’s name was CH Ramsey Lane’s Tailored Genes. And his daughter, CH Shelby’s Mad ‘Bout You.
I met “Uno”, this years Westminster Best In Show winner, the other day at the Belleville. IL shows. He is a great little dog. And I have met many champions owned by people around my dog show community.
Champions and titled dogs are just the same as any other dog, purebred or mixed. Yes, some are better behaved and better socialized due to thier life of showing, training and traveling…but they are still the sweet companions we mainly aquired them for. They have no idea how great us humans think they are. They never get big heads or think they are “all that”…they stay humble and love to be loved just like any other dog. The titles are just something that says they have accomplished something…like a person who has had a lot of education. Except, dogs don’t let it go to thier heads! :)

Most champs are normal dogs. They sleep in your bed,beg for treats, chase lizards, squirrels, veg out on the couch with you. They just go to shows and get groomed more.I have shown and bred several champs.

I show my dogs and I’ve met a lot of them! Conformation championships are only one of many titles a dog can achieve.
Conformation champions generally are very good representatives of their breed, but what a “good representative” is can vary depending on who you’re talking to. A dog in a conformation show is being judged against the standard. A good handler can show a dog in such a way that it appears to best advantage in the ring.
Most of the champions I’ve met were good tempered dogs who were faithful representatives of their breed. Many of them had multiple titles, especially the working and sporting dogs.

The first breed champion I met was a magnificent white Standard Poodle called Wildwind Iceman – he introduced himself to me my jumping into my lap! – He was really a fun-type dog and had magnificent conformation. We eventually got one of his sons, Wildwind Flashman (Lennon), from the breeder. Lennon was our first Stud dog and is the great-grandfather of the poodle I have now..

Im impressed also by some of the champions.
I met my boys great grandfather at a staffy show. His name is Gr Ch Gemstaff Tears of a clown. I had tears in my eyes cause I had read so much about him. He loves the show ring and was 13 years old when I met him and won a veterans show.
Some of the champions are magnificant examples of what the breed should look like and I always tell anyone if they are interested in getting a pedigree dog to go to shows first.
The president of the staffy asc here in Oz has two Crossgun staffys that she imported form the famous Crossguns kennels in the U.K. They are Aust Ch Crossguns Jetsetter and Aust Ch Crossguns Lady Madonna. Ive met them both and completely fell in love. Their great grandfather is the highest point scoring staffy in the world. Im waiting for a pup!!!!
The highest point scoring staffy here in W.A. for the last two years in Gr Ch Whobedat Up to scratch C.D. Hes a little stunner and loves to perform. The C.D after his ped name stands for Companion Dog, which is also a title.
Im like a star struck school kid around these dogs!!!
    Take care. X

Yep, I’ve met champion dogs before, and there were multiple champions in my presence when I picked up my dog from the breeders. Beautiful animals. (Not saying a dog has to be purebred to be beautiful, it’s like comparing apples to oranges. But when I’m looking at a purebred dog, I love to see a well-bred purebred rather than a poorly-bred purebred.)

The first Ch. dogs I know I met were the GSDs owned by my old boss and my dogs breeder. She showed GSDs and had a few English Cockers as well. From working with her I have become friends with quite a few people in the area who show in conformation, and have thus met other breed champions; Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Dachshunds, Bull Mastiffs, Pomeranians ect.. Then of course in getting my Cavalier Paris I met other Ch. dogs at her breeders, and met other Ch. Cavaliers that people own. And of course the dog show :)

I’ve met a ch. ridgeback(AKC, CKC, Intl. UKC, she has a lot of time on her hands lol :) , he’s a sweet well adjusted dog, he’s one of Amara’s buddies at the dog park, his owner is a little nutty but he’s sweet.
I’ve also met a ch. great dane… that one bit me, would have broken skin had I not been wearing so many layers, as it was I was only bruised quite badly. He was the #1 dane that year ( I even looked him up) and it concerned me about judging quality… oh well, they’re not all like that. I’ve been around several other titled dogs. Some with a huge list behind their names!

  11. LeapFrog says:

My English Bulldog’s dad was a champion, to be honest I really didn’t think anything about it. I love my dog for her not for her heritage…lol….anyways she is now spayed a wonderful and loving member of the family regardless of her heritage…

If you are ever buying a purebred dog from a reputable breeder you should be able to see at least one champion when you pick up the puppy. I mean, of course, the mother (dam). Breeders seek conformation championship for the purpose of determining worthy breeding stock. A conformation champion (that’s what gives the dog the CH in front of the name, not all the letters after the name) is merely a dog that supposedly meets the standards for physical build, gait, and temperament. They aren’t necessarily anything “special” (though ALL dogs are special, of course), but rather well bred and worthy of passing on genetic material. I have two Havanese show dogs and, yes, they are very smart, and Havanese also do well in agility, which sounds like what you were seeing. Glad you liked them. I’m very biased about Havanese, but I still contend they are some of the best all around dogs I’ve ever been around.
