Could A Small Dog Like A Havanese Mate With A Mastiff Or Great Dane?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
All 3 dogs are scheduled to be fixed in 6-8 weeks of time(this is when the vet was available?
Could a Small dog like a Havanese mate with a Mastiff or Great Dane?
should they be kept separate when they are in heat?
They don’t socialize with other dogs just with each other, but is it safe to leave them together while one is in heat?
Thanks

yes, they could mate, I’d be very careful, that wold be a horrible mess.
When a dog is in heat, no matter the size difference, it should be kept away from all unaltered males. Accidents happen quicker than you think. If the female is small and the male large he could easily hurt her by trying to breed with her. I would suggest keeping them seperate until the vet can do the surgery. Or possibly calling and seeing if there is a way to get in sooner with the female if you don’t want to deal with the hassle of keeping them apart.
We had a male pug mate with our female mastiff once. He got her while she was lying down. I couldn’t imagine a small dog giving birth to puppies whose father was large, though. The mating would probably be painful enough, but she could die from pregnancy complications before she was even ready to give birth. I’ve seen two cats and a dog die a couple weeks before their litters were due because their babies took up too much space, I don’t know if this was a cross-breed issue but I’d imagine it would be in your situation.
I wouldn’t recommend it. It would be murder to expect a small dog to give birth to puppies that large. I’m assuming the havanese is female. Either way keep them separate and get them fixed as scheduled
yes they could mate..
no, its not safe. Keep them separated during the heat cycle.
yes, but you don’t want that to happen
