3 Month Old Puppy Questions… Potty Training, Treats, Feeding, Etc…?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
I’m having a bit of difficulty getting her to use the training pads, she always pees somewhere else. She is pretty good with going outdoors, but I have to be on top of her taking her out every so often, and she’ll pee on the floor between trips out. I wake up to a few poops every morning, off the pad of course. Is there anything I can do about this? How long on average does it take for the training to sink in? And when will I be able to reward her with treats for going in the appropriate place, and what brands are healthier. One last question, how often should I be feeding her, and how much.
Sorry for the long entry and many questions. I just got a 3 month old havanese two days ago, and I want to the best for her in every way.

Well, as far as the potty training goes i would ditch the pads. You’re goal is to get her to use the bathroom outside and the pads encourage indoor potty usage. It tends to confuse the dog….
Put her on a schedule – she goes out after eating/drinking, after playing, after naps, and every two hours otherwise. Feed at the same time each day – the bag of food should have the amounts you should feed right on it. Bring her to the same spot and try to get rid of distractions.
Any treat will be a good reward. I use a wide variety myself – Canine Carry Outs, Gooberlicious, and so on. I would only use one at a time until you know if they upset your pups stomach. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?…http://www.perfectpaws.com/pupstuff.htmlhttp://www.training-dogs.com/potty-train…
Well , I had the same problem 2 years ago and I wouldnt recommend you to use the diaper pads, because your dog will get used to them and you constantly have to buy them, so when she looks like she wants to go or if you would rather wait, put a newspaper on the ground and tell her to pee there and it will take constant training. But what I do recommend is getting the “Training dogs for Dummies” book, It helped me alot!!
take your dog outside when it’s sniffing and is going in small normal paced circles. that is a sign of a dog having to use the bathroom. when you take it to ‘go’ make sure you use the same door always! i got my dog potty trained with in a week or two. now whenever he needs to ‘go’ he goes to that same door!
I think that everytime u see ur dog doing something u like give her treats. buy her good smelling treats that she would like to have when she does something good to earn it so she can get the hang of it.
Next time she uses the floor as her bathroom, put the pee pad next to where she peed/pooped. Hopefully this will get her to realize that that’s the place that she should relieve herself. If you catch her peeing/pooping on the floor, scold her with a sharp ‘no.’ But only scold her if you catch her, because dogs can’t connect the scolding to the past naughtiness. Be sure to praise her when she does use the pee pad. Do you have the kind of pee pads with the special scent that makes dogs want to use them? Check the packaging. If you don’t, consider getting some, they may help. My dogs have never used pee pads, but my neighbor’s dogs (whom I often dogsit) do, and they always use them. Well, one of them does, one is a bit like your little puppy. And give her a few days, she’s only a baby.
For the food issue, be sure that you’re feeding her food specifically for puppies. You shouldn’t feed her a large amount once a day, feed her a small bowlful two or three times a day.
Good luck with your training!
If you really want to house break your dog, get her a crate and make her sleep in it at night. First of all, she won’t go in the crate, because dogs dont’ like to sleep where they pee and poop. Everytime you come home, take them straight out to use the restroom. Take her out all the time. Pads just prolong the process. We had an 11 week lab, and within 3 days she was house trained. She has had a couple accidents, but when I saw few I mean like 1 or two since then. She is 16 weeks now and always goes to the door to when she needs to do her business.
If this doesnt’ work, start feeding her in her crate, which will accelrate this, because dogs really don’t like to pee and poop where they eat.
As far as treats go, there are some call Zukes that we got at Petco, which are small and not high in calorie. They are great for all training. But remember that even positive reinforcement will work as well.
I would also recomend making her sit before she goes outside, this will teach her that if she needs to go, she will go to the door and sit. Thus signaling you to let her out. Try using the same door everytime too.
First, good luck with the new pup, it can be really hard if you have never had a dog before.
The best way to house break ur puppy is to crate train it. Because the training pads really don’t work. but instead of throwing them away, use them to line the bottom of the crate. It may seem a little mean to do, but in the end it is the best thing you could ever do. You start out by leaving the puppy inside when you are away, and when you go to sleep. It’ll probably still go in the crate occasionally, but will stop all together after awhile, then you can just start letting it out more often. It takes about a month or so for the training to be complete.
Any type of treats are ok, as long as they are meant for puppies. but don’t get her too used to them.
And for the last part, you should feed her 3 times a day until she hits 6 months, then twice a day is good.
Hope I was able to answer ur questions. Good luck with ur lil girl…
My pug was soooo stubborn to potty train, she wasn’t until 5 months to be completely potty trained! We got her at 3 1/2 months! They say pugs are the hardest to potty train and after that never in the house again! Check out some tips I have for you! When using the potty pad use 2 or three, she may think that thats not enough room, and if she goes off to the side and half off, she tried so reward her, my pug does that! lol. Every time she goes outside or on the potty pad reward her, when she doesn’t put her nose in the pee or poo and with a stern voice say NO. If you take her out once an hour she should be good! Try crate training her at night! So if she pottys she has to sit in it, it may be messy for the first night or so then she will realize, hey if I go potty I will have to sit in it and get all nasty! If potty pads dont work at all use the welcome mats that have fake grass and a little flower, that did it for mine!!! Good Luck!!!
